The forms of animation are many. While we tend to identify with conventional narrative and figurative forms, the animation from the beginning was an experimental version closely related to abstract and avant-garde artistic movements with authors such as Viking Eggeling and Walther Ruttmann. Later, mainly with artists such as Norman McLaren, John Whitney, Len Lye and Stan Brakhage, abstract and experimental animation reaches a huge development. Even as a form of animation today minority, closely linked in many cases at electronic music and VJ work for clubs.
This relationship with music is interesting because it has existed since the first experiments of WaltherRuttmann and Viking Eggeling who used terms related to classical music as ”symphony” or ”opus” and raised its abstract animations, in line with artists like Kandinsky, establishing a close connection between art and music. Later Norman McLaren not only continue that tradition but accentuated by the relationship between animation studios and dance.
Experimental and abstract animation continues to develop.

Experimentación.
Las formas de animación son múltiples. Si bien solemos identificarla con formas figurativas y narrativas convencionales, la animación desde sus orígenes tuvo una versión experimental y abstracta estrechamente relacionada con los movimientos artísticos de vanguardia con autores como Viking Eggeling y Walther Ruttmann. Más tarde, fundamentalmente con artistas como Norman Mclaren, John Whitney, Len Lye o Stan Brakhage, la animación abstracta y experimental alcanza un desarrollo enorme. Aún siendo hoy una forma de animación minoritaria, muy ligada en muchos casos a la música electrónica y el trabajo de los VJ para los clubes.
Esta relación con la música es interesante porque existe ya desde las primeras experimentaciones de Viking Eggeling y Walther Ruttmann que utilizaban términos relacionados con la música clásica como “sinfonía” u “opus” y planteaban sus animaciones abstractas, en línea con artistas como Kandinsky (recordemos su famosa sinestesia), estableciendo una estrecha conexión entre arte y música. Posteriormente Norman McLaren no sólo continuaría con esa tradición sino que la acentuaría realizando estudios de relación entre animación y danza.
La animación experimental y abstracta sigue desarrollándose.

For some time ago I think Punk is, probably, one of the most influential social movements have had in later years.

After the great rupture of the decade of the sixties, in the eighties punk is a way of thinking and action, rebellion and nihilism of broad impact on our time, both from a social and artistic  point of view. If the sixties were the era of emancipation and search for alternatives in the eighties punk emerged as a mockery of the rigidity of the conventional ways of hiding social and cultural oppression.

Punk is a movement of an individual and nihilist who rejects the dogmas and the established order, therefore, lacks a particular political ideology, although often associated with counterculture movements and underground and develop a strong socially critical load and action.

It is in this context where contemporary art and Punk match. From the seventies and eighties many artists seek to break the rules and corsets and strategies established by using elements of the counterculture.Thereafter the images, schemes and counter-action of Punk is often used to increase strength and reach of the works of art, often in clear contradiction between the message and market. There are many examples from artists who took active part in their punk origins like Robert Longo, Raymond Pettibon, Thomas Hirschhorn or Cristopher Wool, to the current YBA like Damien Hirst or Tracey Emin, the Germans Daniel Richter, Angus Fairhurst, Thomas Scheibitz and a long list that can reach to youngs like David Adamo, or in Spain to Santiago Sierra or Karmelo Bermejo. David Shrigley is an recognized artist that performs many of his works in animation with a strong aesthetic of Punk to write a post in the future.

In the current animation is a lot of films that use social criticism, satire, drawing and other strategies deliberately neglected the counter culture themselves brilliantly. The artists use aesthetics and style of underground comics and fanzine. Unify the harsh and experimental sound of punk with the image and can develop in a free and comprehensive topics, satire, social criticism and nihilism.

Therefore, the animation is shown as a powerful expressive tool for those artists influenced by this movement.

Post Punk

Desde hace bastante tiempo pienso que el Punk es, probablemente, uno de los movimientos sociales que más influencia han tenido en los años posteriores.

Tras la gran ruptura de la década de los sesenta, el Punk de los ochenta supone una vía de pensamiento y acción, de revuelta y de nihilismo de amplia repercusión en nuestro tiempo, tanto desde el punto de vista social como del artístico. Si los sesenta fueron la época de la emancipación y búsqueda de alternativas, en los ochenta el Punk surgió como una burla a la rigidez de los convencionalismos que ocultaban formas de opresión social y cultural.

El Punk es un movimiento de carácter individualista y nihilista que rechaza los dogmas y el orden establecido, por tanto, carece de una ideología política concreta, si bien suele estar asociada a los movimientos contraculturales, underground y antisistema y desarrolla una fuerte carga de crítica social y de acción.

Es en este contexto donde el arte contemporáneo y el Punk coinciden. A partir de los setenta y ochenta muchos artistas pretenden romper las normas y los corsés establecidos utilizando elementos y estrategias de la contracultura. A partir de entonces las imágenes, los esquemas y la acción contracultural del Punk se usan con frecuencia para aumentar la fuerza y alcance de las obras de arte, muchas veces en clara contradicción entre mensaje y mercado. Los ejemplos son múltiples, desde artistas que formaron parte activa del punk en sus orígenes como Raymond Pettibon, Robert Longo, Thomas Hirschhorn a los actuales YBA como Damien Hirst o Tracey Emin, los Alemanes Daniel Richter, Angus Fairhurst, Thomas Scheibitz y una larga lista que puede llegar hasta algunos muy jóvenes como David Adamo o, en España, a Santiago Sierra o Karmelo Bermejo. Por último nombrar a David Shrigley , un reconocido artista que realiza bastantes de sus obras en animación con una fuerte estética Punk del que escribiré un post en el futuro.

En la animación actual hay una gran cantidad de películas que utilizan la crítica social, la sátira, el dibujo deliberadamente descuidado y otras estrategias propias de la contracultura de forma brillante. Los artistas utilizan la estética y el estilo del fanzine y el comic underground. Unifican el sonido áspero y experimental del Punk potenciado con la imagen y pueden desarrollar de una manera libre y completa los temas, la sátira y la crítica social nihilistas y antisistema.

Por tanto, la animación se muestra como una poderosa herramienta expresiva para aquellos artistas influidos por este movimiento.
